Al-Nahrain Center Holds a Specialized Workshop on the Occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification

Al-Nahrain Center for Strategic Studies, in cooperation with the Popular Relief Organization and Nasmat Ataa Organization, held a specialized workshop on the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification, with the participation of representatives from a number of ministries, government bodies, experts, and civil society organizations.

The workshop discussed the reality of desertification and drought in Iraq, and the importance of the World Day to Combat Desertification, which was proclaimed by the United Nations and is observed on 17 June each year to raise awareness of these environmental challenges and highlight ways to address them.

The participants emphasized a number of recommendations, most notably holding an annual national conference bringing together ministries, research institutions, and relevant civil society organizations; strengthening academic studies on climate and desertification within master's and doctoral programs; raising public awareness of the risks of desertification and its implications for Iraq's national security; as well as employing artificial intelligence technologies and early warning systems to monitor desertification, sand dunes, and drought, and to develop appropriate measures to address them.
